Dental Edition

HM Praxis has a dedicated dental edition that unlocks the moment a member sets their specialty to Dental in Settings → Profile. It adds an Odontogram item to the navigation and a Dental tab in Settings, then layers a complete dental workflow - tooth charting, periodontal exams, a treatment board, imaging, lab cases, recare, and operatories - on top of everything HM Praxis already does.

Representative interface preview. The sections below carry the full, readable detail.
Turn it on with your specialty

The dental edition is not a separate download or a paid add-on. It is part of HM Praxis and appears as soon as your specialty is Dental. Clinical records stay encrypted on your device exactly as they do everywhere else in the app.

Turning On the Dental Edition

1

Open Settings → Profile

From the user menu, open Settings and go to the Profile tab. Your specialty is a per-member choice, so you set your own without affecting anyone else on the team.

2

Set your specialty to Dental

Choose Dental from the specialty list and save. HM Praxis tailors the app to a dental workflow the moment you do.

3

Find the new dental surfaces

Two things appear:

  • An Odontogram item in the main navigation
  • A Dental tab in Settings, where you manage operatories (chairs)
Per clinician, never forced on the org

Setting your specialty to Dental changes only your view. A dental hygienist, a general dentist, and a non-dental colleague can share one organization and database while each keeps the right tools. See the Specialties guide for how this works across a team.

Odontogram (FDI Tooth Chart)

The odontogram is an interactive 32-tooth chart using the international FDI numbering. It is the visual home of each patient's dental status, and there is exactly one per patient.

1

Open the Odontogram for a patient

From the patient or from the Odontogram nav item, open the chart. HM Praxis keeps one odontogram per patient, so it is always the same canonical chart you return to.

2

Click a tooth to set its condition

The chart is the full 32-tooth FDI layout - upper teeth 18 to 28, lower teeth 48 to 38. Click any tooth and pick a condition:

  • Caries
  • Filling
  • Crown
  • Root canal (RCT)
  • Implant
  • Missing
  • Extract (planned extraction)

Each condition is color-coded so the mouth's status reads at a glance.

3

Resolve a tooth with Clear

When a tooth is treated and back to healthy, use Clear to remove its condition. Patients who have any charted conditions show a charted badge, so you can tell at a glance who already has a dental record.

Periodontal Charting

For periodontal work, create a dated perio exam, then record the standard six measurements per tooth - one at each site: MB, B, DB, ML, L, DL. For each site you capture:

  • Pocket depth in millimeters (0 to 15 mm)
  • Bleeding on probing (present or not)

Because each exam is dated, measurements accumulate over time, so you can follow a site or a quadrant across visits and see whether it is improving or worsening.

Treatment Board

The treatment board turns a clinical plan into agreed work and then into a clean invoice. The key rule: you only ever bill what the patient accepts.

1

Build your procedure catalog

The treatment board starts from a procedure catalog - each procedure has a name and a default cost. Maintain it once and reuse it for every patient.

2

Add plan items for the patient

For a patient, add plan items. Each item is a procedure, the tooth it applies to, and a cost (defaulted from the catalog, editable). Each item carries a status:

  • Planned - proposed, not yet agreed
  • Approved - the patient has accepted it
  • Completed - the work is done
  • Cancelled - no longer happening
3

Create an invoice for accepted work only

Click Create invoice and HM Praxis bills only the work the patient has accepted - the items that are approved or completed and not yet invoiced. Planned and cancelled items are never billed.

Each item links to its invoice

When an item is billed it is linked to the invoice that billed it, so it will not be charged twice and you can trace every charge back to the exact procedure and tooth.

Dental Imaging and X-Ray

Capture or import imaging per patient, including:

  • Periapical X-rays
  • Bitewing X-rays
  • Panoramic X-rays
  • Intraoral photos

Images appear as a thumbnail gallery, and you open the full-resolution viewer only when you need it, so the gallery stays fast.

Stored encrypted, in a separate attachments database

Dental images are kept encrypted in a separate attachments database on your device, not in the cloud. Like the rest of your clinical data, they never leave your machine for the vendor. See Data Custody & Recovery for how on-device encryption works.

Lab Cases

Track lab work per patient so a crown or aligner never falls through the cracks. Each case records the type of work and the lab vendor:

  • Crown
  • Bridge
  • Denture
  • Aligner
  • Other

A case moves through a clear status lifecycle: draft → sent → in lab → received → seated, with cancelled available as an off-ramp.

Recare and Recall

Keep patients on schedule with recurring recall plans. Each recare schedule has a type and a next-due date:

  • Hygiene
  • Perio maintenance
  • Exam
Surfaced as reminders

When a recall comes due it is surfaced as a reminder, so the front desk knows who to reach out to without combing through charts.

Operatories and Chairs

Manage your chairs and rooms under Settings → Dental. Once your operatories are defined, you can assign an operatory to an appointment, so the schedule reflects which chair each patient is in.

Operatories work with the schedule you already use

Assigning a chair is an extra dimension on the normal appointment, not a separate calendar. See the Appointments guide for scheduling.
