Documents

Attach files to a patient's record: consent forms, lab results, imaging, insurance cards, referrals. Everything stays local on your device, indexed for fast retrieval.

Local file storage

Uploaded files are copied into HM Praxis's local storage. They are never uploaded to rb-devops.com servers. Your device's disk space is the only practical limit.

Uploading a Document

1

Open the Documents Page

From the sidebar, click Documents. The page lists every document uploaded across all patients, with filters by patient, type, and date.

2

Click "Upload Document"

A file picker opens. Choose one or more files from your computer. HM Praxis accepts PDF, JPG, PNG, and common document formats (DOCX, XLSX, TXT, CSV).

3

Tag the Document

Fill in:

  • Patient the document belongs to
  • Document type (consent form, lab result, imaging, insurance, referral, other)
  • Title a short descriptive name
  • Description with any context that helps a future you find it
4

Save

Click Save. The document is copied into HM Praxis's local document store and becomes visible on the patient's Documents tab.

Where files actually live

Documents are stored inside HM Praxis's local data directory, not in the SQLite database itself. Backups include the documents folder, so a restore brings back both the metadata and the files.

Document Types

Tagging by type lets you filter the Documents page and surface only what you need:

  • Consent form - signed treatment consent, photo release, etc.
  • Lab result - bloodwork, biopsies, pathology reports
  • Imaging - X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds
  • Insurance - insurance cards, claim forms, EOBs
  • Referral - inbound or outbound referral letters
  • Other - anything that does not fit a specific category

Viewing and Downloading

Click any document in the list to open it. HM Praxis previews images and PDFs inline. Other formats open with your operating system's default application.

  • Open launches the file in its native viewer
  • Download copies the file to a folder you choose
  • Edit metadata updates the title, type, or description
  • Delete removes both the metadata and the file

Finding Documents

The Documents page has three ways to narrow the list:

  • Search by title or description
  • Filter by patient for everything attached to one person
  • Filter by type to see, for example, all consent forms

The patient detail page also has a Documents tab that auto-filters to that patient's uploads.

Privacy and Compliance

You retain full custody of every uploaded document. HM Praxis does not transmit, index, or analyze the files outside your device. Encryption at rest depends on your operating system's disk encryption (FileVault, BitLocker, LUKS).

Plan your backups

Patient documents are irreplaceable. Enable scheduled backups so a disk failure does not cost you the originals. See the Backups guide.
